One person surrounded by something larger than themselves — a station, a staircase, a city block. The world takes over. The individual becomes part of the scene.

Most of these photographs were made through windows. At first, it was a way to stay on the outside looking in. Over time, it became something else. A way to connect with people while keeping a little distance.

Reflections are supposed to make things clearer. They don't. These photographs layer inside and outside, real and reflected, until the scene becomes harder to read than the thing itself. I'm not sure that's a problem.

Most of these started with a glance, a smile, or a few words. Some conversations lasted a minute. Some lasted seconds. What they had in common was a willingness to be seen. I've made these portraits across different cities, countries, and cultures — but where they were taken matters less than what happened to make them possible. A stranger said yes. That's the photograph.
